At first/Initially/Upon opening it, I was surprised to find a small package/an unexpected gift/something unusual. Inside/Contained within/Tucked inside the box/envelope/parcel was a beautiful scarf/delicious chocolate bar/funny card! I was thrilled/was ecstatic/was pleasantly amazed by this kind/thoughtful/unexpected gesture. It's always nice/pleasant/delightful to receive something special/surprising/unanticipated.
